A TASTE OF EDMONTON
When: July 17 – 26
Time: 11 am – 11 pm
Where: Sir Winston Churchill Square
The year was 1984. Edmonton’s very successful Klondike theme was in full swing. Numerous events and parties were being staged all over Edmonton. Breakfasts with Klondike Kate and the official Klondike Orchestra were very popular. Particularly the Cheechako Breakfast put on by the Canadian Progress Club.
The Edmonton Klondike Days Association (EKDA) board heard of a function being staged in Chicago called “A Taste of Chicago” It was apparently a very successful event. The EKDA, headed then by President Earl Krausert, decided to send General Manger Pip Martin to Chicago to see how they were doing it and if Edmonton could host one of its own. Pip came back with a filled notebook and the first Taste of Edmonton came to life. The rest is history. The first Taste featured 24 restaurants over a three day week-end. It was staged on the outdoor plaza at the Edmonton Convention Centre, and then moved to Churchill Square. It increased to 7 days and eventually 10 days, as it currently exists. The early restaurants participation was credited to Hans Kuhnel, then president of the Restaurant Association. We are now celebrating our 25th Anniversary with the popular event. Last year over half a million people who enjoyed A Taste of Edmonton.
